Carol Spieckerman - Chief Curator
This is the most exciting time I can remember in retail. Ever.
Rationalization isn't always rational (and that's great news)!
The other day, a client said to me "We can be transparent with you." Made my day (and it's why we guard confidentiality).
Lisa Carver is the only person I know who's right brain and left brain are dominant . . . and balanced. Not sure how you make people like that but I try not to mess with the formula!
People hire NMB to have us personally involved with their success.
Art, music, sales, management, writing, retail . . . everything's connected.
These days I'm inspired by Jeanne Gang, Olafur Eliasson, Gerhard Richter, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, the Orsay, The New Yorker, Esquire, Cory Doctorow . . .
Style icons? Lapo Elkann, Philip Treacy, Rei Kawakubo, the gals at Rodarte, Waris Ahluwalia.
Starting in the schmatte business was a gift. An industry that has to reinvent itself several times a year is one to watch no matter where you play. Notice how everyone is "in fashion" in one way or another?
People tell me I don't "look" like a retail veteran. Music to my ears!
There's nothing better than hearing that everyone from the receptionist to the ceo is looking forward to our arrival.
Our clients are experts in their categories. We are experts at keeping suppliers relevant at retail.
My current retail role models are Stanley Marcus, Sam Walton, Angela Ahrendts, Tadashi Yanai, Robert Mettler, Walmart, Colette & Merci (Paris), Best Buy.
Why Best Buy? They are stepping out and trying new things, lots of them, all at once yet they get how all of it is connected . . . and the massive potential.
You're in sales. Trust me.
